Manual Therapy & Myofascial Release
Manual therapy is a hands-on approach used by physical therapists to reduce pain, improve mobility, and restore function. Rather than relying solely on machines or exercise, your therapist uses skilled touch to assess and treat the muscles, joints, and connective tissue directly — identifying restrictions and addressing them in real time.
Myofascial Release
Fascia is the connective tissue that surrounds and supports muscles throughout the body. When it becomes tight or restricted — due to injury, poor posture, overuse, or scar tissue — it can cause pain, stiffness, and limited movement well beyond the original problem area. Myofascial release uses sustained, gentle pressure to release these restrictions, improve tissue mobility, and relieve pain.
Joint Mobilizations
Joint mobilizations involve skilled, hands-on movement of a joint through its natural range of motion. This technique helps to:
- Reduce stiffness and improve joint mobility
- Decrease pain associated with joint restrictions
- Improve movement quality before and during exercise-based treatment
Mobilizations range from gentle, slow-oscillating techniques to more targeted movements, depending on your condition and comfort level.
Traction
Traction involves a gentle, controlled pulling force applied to a joint (commonly the spine, neck, or extremities) to create space between joint surfaces. This can help:
- Relieve pressure on nerves or discs
- Reduce pain and muscle guarding
- Improve circulation and mobility in the treated area
Why It Matters
These manual techniques are often combined with therapeutic exercise and patient education to create a well-rounded treatment plan. Hands-on care allows your therapist to identify subtle restrictions, adapt treatment in the moment, and help your body move and feel better — addressing not just symptoms, but the underlying cause of pain and dysfunction.
Manual Therapy & Myofascial Release FAQ’s
Does dry needling hurt?
Most patients feel little to no discomfort when the needle is inserted, since the needles are extremely thin. You may feel a brief muscle twitch, ache, or cramp-like sensation when the needle reaches a trigger point — this is normal and often means the treatment is working. Any discomfort is typically brief.
Is dry needling safe?
Yes. It’s performed by licensed, trained physical therapists using sterile, single-use needles. Serious side effects are rare when performed by a qualified provider.
Will I be sore afterward?
Mild soreness or a “worked out” feeling in the treated muscle is common for 24–48 hours after treatment. This typically resolves on its own, and staying hydrated and gently moving the area can help.
How is dry needling different from acupuncture?
While both use thin needles, dry needling is based on Western medicine and targets specific muscle trigger points to relieve pain and improve function. Acupuncture is rooted in traditional Chinese medicine and focuses on energy pathways (meridians).
How many sessions will I need?
This varies by person and condition. Some people feel relief after one session, while others benefit from a series of treatments as part of a broader treatment plan. Your therapist will discuss a plan tailored to your goals.
Who shouldn't receive manual therapy?
Manual therapy may not be appropriate for people with certain conditions, such as acute fractures, active infections, certain circulatory issues, or specific spinal conditions. Always share your full medical history with your therapist so they can determine the safest approach for you.
Can manual therapy be combined with other treatments?
Yes — manual therapy is often paired with therapeutic exercise, patient education, and other modalities to create a comprehensive treatment plan tailored to your specific needs and goals.
